The Testament of Sherlock Holmes

sherlock

I’m a detective!  Or at least that’s the sentiment I have when I’m playing The Testament of Sherlock Holmes. I only found out about it a few days before release, and decided to take a gander and see what Frogwares had developed. I realized my purchase was the right one when the game reminded me to save, and when during the loading screen I received a historical tidbit. I am almost finished the game and I can still say that this purchase is definitely worthwhile.

Rock Band Blitz Review

rockbandblitz

The plastic instrument revolution has come and gone. The days and nights of strumming, drumming and singing off-key are no more. While Guitar Hero faded away in sequel after sequel, Rock Band took this opportunity to evolve. Rock Band Blitz manages to radically change the way we play, but still have the player feel like they are playing the music.

McPixel Review

mcPixelSchool

I want to start my McPixel review with one phrase: Buy this game. McPixel is best described as a Wario Ware version of an adventure game. Each scenario has one objective, prevent catastrophe (usually a bomb) using only the objects on the screen. Even though each scenario has numerous endings, only one will be the one you’re looking for. Half of the fun in McPixel is discovering everything in the stage…no seriously, after you find the right answer, you’re tasked with finding the remaining gags and unlocking themed stages.

A Review of Tapfish

tapfish1

My luck with fish has been rather tenuous over the years. My first one actually lasted almost a year. The next ones after that lasted less than 24 hours (both of them), although I think that was due to the fact that they were $0.77 each and that I had bought them from a tank with a dead fish in it. Later on I purchased minnows and they lasted a while (I even had a snail growing!) before donating them to my friend after a few close calls with my cat.

Theatrythm: Final Fantasy

theatrhythm

Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy is the Final Fantasy 25th anniversary game I didn’t know I wanted. I was suspicious about a rhythm game that uses Final Fantasy as a backdrop, but was surprised how well it works. It manages to be nostalgic in just the right way, while being a completely fresh approach the series’ legacy. While I have seen comparisons to the DS game Elite Beat Agents, this has more in common with Guitar Hero/Rock Band and Rhythm Heaven given its note highway and the ability to tap anywhere on the touch screen.

Diablo III Review

diablo3

I am a huge Diablo fan. I’ll admit right now that I lost myself for many, many hours between the first two games. So when I heard that after 12 long years Diablo was finally getting a third installment – you can imagine how stoked I was. The disappointment I felt after playing through the game, however, is something I could never have imagined.

THQ’s Jason Rubin Has His Work Cut Out For Him

thqlogo

THQ’s new president Jason Rubin has not had an easy time of it so far in the month he has had his position. From stealth studio closures, licensing woes and of course the brief internet meltdown over Saints Row’s “Embarrass-gate”, Rubin has been at the center of it all. It seems that the man with years of reliable and consistent business experience in the game industry can suddenly do no right.

The golden age of Theme Hospital, Rollercoaster Tycoon and Pharaoh

themehospital

There is something missing from the line of gaming genres of today. One that slipped away at the end of the 90’s when the Unreal engine became big, and the rise of the first-person shooter began its cover-based grip on the games industry. Before Mass Effect and Dragon Age, when everyone would hook up computers and play Baldur’s Gate II until the sun rose. There is a genre that became neglected.

Sydney Supanova 2012 – Superheroes, Villains and Celebrity Stars, oh my!

supanovaban

Yesterday I had the great privilege of representing the folks at Save Game at Sydney Supanova; a pop culture expo that tours the country with stars from all corners of Geek culture. Not only was it my first Supanova but it was also my first convention of any size or shape. And putting it bluntly – it was a hell of a way to get my feet wet.
