Check out the first gameplay footage for The Long Dark

LongDark-bannerSurvival games usually involve a lot more than just surviving.  There’s the zombie killing, and the alien conquering, and the evil global corporation toppling.  But a new indie game called The Long Dark is something different.  The Long Dark is all about survival, pure and simple, and we’ve got an early look at some gameplay after the jump…

Described by its creators as a “first person survival simulation that emphasizes quiet exploration in a stark, yet hauntingly beautiful, post-disaster setting,” The Long Dark is aiming to give an immersive experience in a visually striking way.  Taking place after a geomagnetic event has rendered most of human technology inoperable, The Long Dark tells the story of William Mackenize, a bush pilot who crashes into a snowy forest in the Pacific Northwest, and must survive against the elements, predatory animals, and other survivors of the disaster.

The Long Dark is being developed by Hinterland Games, which is made up of former developers from Bioware, Relic, Volition, and Riot.  In all, the core team at Hinterland has worked on over 40 triple-A titles.  So in other words, they sorta know what they’re doing.  Check out the first gameplay footage below, narrated by Raphael Van Lierop, creative director at Hinterland.

The Long Dark is currently on Kickstarter, and time is running out to back the project.  As of the publication date of this article, there are 8 days left in Hinterland’s Kickstarter campaign, and they’re still about $75,000 short of their $200,000 goal.  So if The Long Dark has you intrigued, you might consider backing the project, and supporting some talented developers who are trying to breathe new life into the survival genre.

Joe was born in a time of war. A console war. Two electronic titans were locked in a heated battle for the living rooms of America. Which titans, you ask? Well, the Fairchild Channel F and the Atari 2600 of course. You see, Joe is old. So many of his favorite games tend to be on the older side as well. But that hasn’t stopped him from developing unhealthy obsessions with such modern franchises as Halo and Mass Effect. Just don’t tell him how long it’s been since the original Metroid was released. His aging heart can’t take the shock.
