Beyond: Two Souls – Review

9 out of 10 Excellent Recommended

From the first E3 trailer I saw of Beyond: Two Souls I could not wait to have it in my hands and figure out just what was going on. It is an amazing to see developer Quantic Dream take concepts from earlier games Indigo Prophecy (aka Fahrenheit) and Heavy Rain and hone them into something fresh and unique. It is clear that Quantic Dream looked at what didn’t work in Heavy Rain and either fixed or avoided them all together.

The censoring of the Saints: an evaluation of Australia’s games censorship system

Remember the buzz in the Australian gaming scene at the start of the year when we finally got that R18+ category?  It was like Christmas came a week and a bit late! The first half of the year was exciting as we saw various titles released under that shiny new red label that otherwise would not have been seen in their unmodified form in this country. Yet like all good parties someone arrived a little too drunk, upset some people and was refused entry.  What surprised most was that it wasn’t an overtly offensive game, like the Japanese Eroge RapeLay, […]

Beat ‘em Up Royalty: Dragon’s Crown Review

8 out of 10 Great

Ahh, Dragon’s Crown why are you nearly perfect? Why did you have to lean so hard into a controversial art style and that the dialogue around the game focused on breast size rather than the fact that you are a strong gale in the otherwise stagnant waters of the beat ‘em up genre? In other words Dragon’s Crown, should I spend the next decade wondering if you will spawn a sequel, spiritual or direct, in the hopes that the problems will be fixed the next time? Dragon’s Crown surprised me. The enormous sprites, the gorgeous hand painted backgrounds, the way […]

The Double Standards of Entertainment

Earlier this year the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders (DSM-V) was revised to include the ‘disorder’ of Internet Addiction, which I must admit left me shaking my head. I can’t think of any other pastime that comes under such scrutiny than that related to online activities or video games. Spend a winter’s day curled up on the couch reading a book or watching a movie and people accept that as a wonderful way to spend a lazy day. But say you spent that time engaged in the age old battle between the Assassins and Templars, or watching […]

Review – Animal Crossing: New Leaf

I have a confession. Actually, it is more like a confession to an addiction. Animal Crossing has its hooks into me in more ways than I would like to admit.

Review – Fallout Lanius – a Fallout fan film

It can be hard sometimes being a fan. You love something so much, you cherish it with such intensity that it can sometimes become your own life. Yet there are those out there who hate or despise that same something, and those who want to turn it into something it isn’t, something different. Me? I’m a Star Wars fan, so you can imagine the roller coaster ride of the past twenty years, being a fan of a series that constantly updates itself as if it’s trying to keep up instead of standing tall as the innovator it always was.

Your Days Are Numbered, Boys

Gaming has long been a male dominated industry, in both its management and participation. But we are slowly seeing a move away from this with almost half of gamers being female1 and distinct measures taken to garner female involvement at all levels – management, development, and media. One thing that has taken more time, however, is changing the presentation of females in games. Game protagonists have traditionally been male, with females being relegated to lesser roles such as support NPCs, romantic interests, or needing rescuing from a castle (no not that castle, another one). Although this has been recognised, the […]

Review – Runescape

I know what you are thinking. Why is Scott reviewing that old game? Isn’t it full of 8 year olds smack talking each other? Doesn’t it have graphics that are 10 years old? Isn’t it a grind? Read on for the answer to all of those questions and more!

Review – Deadpool

This was a game that was always going to be a risk to make. In every moment of Deadpool, you know that High Moon has endeavoured to embrace the diverse facets of this character. Whether villain, anti-hero or fourth-wall-demolitions-expert, the character’s verbose tendencies had to translate from the comics to the video game. However, this also required High Moon Studios to translate two aspects of the Merc with the Mouth that are controversial, both in this game and in general – playful violence and gore, and male superiority. As a lady gamer, it has been very hard to explain why […]
