PS Vita memory cards will cost a lot

psvita1a

It’s been an interesting week of information on the PS Vita – with both positive news (the strong line up of release games; the handheld’s region free status) as well as less positive news (the reveal of the horrid battery life of the device). Now, it has been revealed that in order to keep the Vita at a competitive price point of $249, Sony had to sacrifice certain features of the Vita, including internal memory. Similar to what they did with the PSP, Sony will be manufacturing memory cards in order to combat this issue, but here’s the sticking point – these cards are going to be expensive with a capital ‘E’.

Just have a look at these prices:

  • 4GB Card – 2,200yen ($29)
  • 8GB Card – 3,200yen ($42)
  • 16GB Card – 5,500yen ($72)
  • 32GB Card – 9,500yen ($124)

Yep. That’s right. A 32GB card is going to set you back almost half the asking price of the hand held. Given how aggressively Sony has been pushing its digital download service, this news is definitely a blow to gamers thinking of picking up the hand held.
