Shelter 2 – The Save Game Review

7.5 out of 10 Good

The survival genre of video games has become synonymous with horror over the years. Zombies, mutants and all sorts of sinister abominations are the forces we’re used to battling against. But Shelter 2 is a very different kind of survival game. In it, you take on the forces of nature itself, and you don’t even do it as a human. No guns, no med packs, just the will to survive, and protect those who need you most.

Review – Life is Strange

9.5 out of 10 Excellent

Narratively-driven video games have enjoyed a renaissance in the last couple of years, showing the wider population that the medium can be just as effective as films, TV and books when it comes to storytelling. And it’s not a niche market: everyone from indie developers to AAA studios are releasing games with strong focus on characterisation, immersive narrative and deep exploration of relatable themes. Of course, the flip side to that is not everyone gets it right. However, Life Is Strange, a new episodic game from developer Dontnod Entertainment, gets it very right.

Review: Grim Fandango Remastered

9 out of 10 Excellent Recommended

In the dying days of the Golden Age of Adventure Games, genre stalwarts Lucasarts released a daring game that strode into the still-novel waters of three-dimensional gaming. That was Grim Fandango, the noirish tale of Manny Calavera, a lowly salesman with the Department of Death, peddling travel packages to the recently deceased. It was the last great adventure game put out by the studio, followed in genre only by the mostly forgettable Escape from Monkey Island. Written and Directed by Tim Schafer, Grim was something special.

NBA 2K15 – The Save Game Review

9.5 out of 10 Excellent

Basketball is a weird sport. I played it for ten years during school and while I learnt skills, no one taught me to be tall. Because my bright and shiny basketball career was tragically cut short, I now write, but thankfully for me and everyone else under 7ft, the latest instalment of Visual Concepts and 2K Games’ long running basketball series is out now.

Gravity Ghost – the Save Game review

7 out of 10 Good

Indie developer Ivy games describes their latest offering as “hours of blissing out to buttery-smooth gravity goodness”. Although their description could be intentionally ambiguous, I believe it does the game a disservice, as there’s a lot more to it than just trying to grapple gravity.

Far Cry 4 – the Save Game review

8 out of 10 Great Recommended

Over the last decade, Far Cry has carved out its own niche within the first person shooter genre of games. It has become famous for its wide open worlds, flamboyant characters, and over the top violence and mayhem. The latest installment, Far Cry 4, trades steamy tropical jungles for Himalayan mountainsides, but otherwise, promises to build on the success of its predecessors. Does it succeed? Let’s find out.

Review – Blackguards 2

8 out of 10 Great

Turn-based strategy games can be a mixed bag. If you don’t have a compelling narrative or something to pull the audience in, boredom can set rather quickly as you take your turn, wait a few minutes, take another turn, wait again…
