New Halo 4 Vidoc Takes Us Inside The Actors Studio

Don’t worry, James Lipton is nowhere to be found.  But a brand new Halo 4 vidoc has been released, and it takes the viewer inside the process that brings Master Chief and Cortana to life.  It’s a fascinating watch, but be warned, there be spoilers after the jump.  Read on to see it for yourself.

In what is apparently the first part in a multiple-vidoc series, “A Hero Awakens” is nearly eleven minutes of interviews and gameplay all centering on the iconic team at the heart of the Halo franchise.  Master Chief and his AI companion, Cortana, were the main characters of the first three Halo titles.  They disappeared completely from ODST, and were relegated to the briefest of cameos in Reach.  But now, they’re back in the spotlight and the new vidoc shows where they’ve been, and where they’re going.  It also offers a great behind-the-scenes look at the motion capture and voice acting sessions which bring these characters to life on screen.  Last chance to avoid spoilers.  And if you’re a big fan of the relationship between Chief and Cortana (like me), you might want to grab a kleenex or two.  Here we go…

See what I mean about the kleenex?  “Don’t make a girl a promise… if you know you can’t keep it.”  Bringing back that line from Halo 2, which was used again so memorably in Halo 3, was unexpected.  I’ve known for years that Cortana would eventually descend into rampancy, but actually seeing it is hitting me harder than I thought it would.  Part of me is hopeful that there is some kind of magical Forerunner cure for rampancy out there, just waiting for Chief to find it.  But another part of me is convinced that part of 343 Industries’ “bold new trilogy” will be either turning Cortana into an adversary, or eliminating her completely.  Afterall, loss and grief can be great motivators for change and blah blah blah OH PLEASE DON’T KILL CORTANA FOR GOD’S SAKE I HAVE A $300 STATUE OF HER IN MY LIVING ROOM.

*cough*

Anyway, Halo 4 releases this November 6th.  Keep checking back here for more updates.

Joe was born in a time of war. A console war. Two electronic titans were locked in a heated battle for the living rooms of America. Which titans, you ask? Well, the Fairchild Channel F and the Atari 2600 of course. You see, Joe is old. So many of his favorite games tend to be on the older side as well. But that hasn’t stopped him from developing unhealthy obsessions with such modern franchises as Halo and Mass Effect. Just don’t tell him how long it’s been since the original Metroid was released. His aging heart can’t take the shock.
