The Save Game Review: Star Wars Battlefront

6 out of 10 Sound

Our review for Star Wars: Battlefront is now up! We jump into the new game and put it through its paces, all while reminiscing over other Star Wars games.  It’s been a long, long time since a game took us to that galaxy far, far away. The games set in the Star Wars universe were more prolific once, many refusing to be bound by either expectation or genre. They weren’t all great and didn’t appeal to everybody, but some of the highlights of gaming can be found here.

Review: Need for Speed

9 out of 10 Excellent Recommended

There are many things that could be said about the latest Need for Speed game, but what stands out most about the experience of playing is the narrative. This is not meant to detract at all from the gameplay itself, which feels great in almost all circumstances, but there is so much character brimming through the same that it’s hard for anything else to eclipse the tone it sets. Welcome to Hoon Town.

Fallout 4: First Impressions

This first impressions article is based on approximately 8 hours of gameplay and is spoiler free Fallout 4, the latest entry in the post-nuclear-apocalypse RPG series is easily one of the most highly anticipated titles of the last few years. Expectations were at an all-time high following Bethesda’s impressive showing at E3 this year, meaning that the final product was going to have to be extremely high class to live up to the hype. Thankfully, for the most part, it does. But it also falls painfully short in some areas.

Review: Assault Android Cactus

8 out of 10 Great Recommended

The controller is at the ready. A logo renders on the screen while a voice reads out the name of the company. A splash of colour declares the title and an upbeat track that’s unmistakably gamey begins to play. Seconds after pressing start, you’re past the menu and watching a cutscene that gives all the premise that the game needs. A little later, you’re in. There’s enemies everywhere, flashing left and right, and all the while your heart pounds in your chest while you make sense of frantic action played out in vibrant colour. Everything moves at a relentless speed – […]

Review: I Can’t Escape: Darkness

5 out of 10 Average

I Can’t Escape: Darkness is a horror game that feels like a forgotten entry from the time of Wizardry VII or Ultima Underworld, but lacks the depth associated with those games that might make it overcome its trangressions. It is not an RPG, instead playing more like a puzzle-based roguelike. As the successor to the newgrounds game I Can’t Escape, it’s an interesting case. The game is entertaining in some ways, but ultimately relies on death as its main teacher, lacks the polish or atmosphere of other indie horror, and feels like a relic of an bygone era rather than […]

Review: Until Dawn

8.5 out of 10 Great Recommended

Until Dawn is the epitome of a slow-burning sleeper hit. Developed by Supermassive Games, this choose-your-own-adventure love letter to 90’s horror arrived on the PS4 with relatively little hype and a lot of detractors prior to release, but has rightfully earned considerable praise and popularity. Until Dawn has slick presentation, engaging writing and gameplay focused on player choice.Highly addictive entertainment, memorable moments and lovingly-crafted atmosphere make it easy to put up with shortcomings, and mean the game can expect to feature in numerous “Best of 2015” lists.

Review – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

9.5 out of 10 Excellent Recommended

Even in writing this, in putting a summation of my experience with the game down into words, I still don’t know how one would actually review The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red’s third instalment in the life of the titular witcher, Geralt of Rivia, is a game that feels larger than any of the behemoths one might encounter while playing.

Review: Submerged

8 out of 10 Great Recommended

There has always been something magical for me about a game that takes to the waves, of rocking back and forth atop the endless blue, or on occasion speeding across it as fast as you can. It doesn’t necessarily turn a game into more than it might already be, but what it does is convey a sense of tranquility. The other type of moment that goes side-by-side with gliding across an ocean is the pour-down bliss of a golden sun, shimmering light across the wet expanse. Uppercut Games have blended both of these experiences together with Submerged.

Review – Jaws of Hakkon

9 out of 10 Excellent Recommended

If you’ve ever played a Bioware game, you know that by the time the first cutscene is over, you’re going to have a dozen new codex entries to read right off the bat. We all saw how crucial lore was in Inquisition – it was like they sharpened it and very sneakily stabbed us in the back with it. Inquisition’s first story-based DLC, Jaws of Hakkon, is now out and available for all platforms, and while it doesn’t address our elven-pantheon related questions, it does give us an extra adventure with new allies and enemies in a beautiful new area […]
