Square Enix has officially released an extended trailer for the third and final installment in the Final Fantasy XIII series, Lightning Returns, which is now scheduled for a fall 2013 release date.

Unlike the party system featured in the first two games of the series, the only playable character in Lightning Returns is, not surprisingly, Lightning, whom we pick up with in the city of Luxerian just 13 days before the end of the world.

To compensate for being the only playable character, and she’ll have a wider range of combat techniques and customizable skills. She’ll also be able to do more exploration of the city and surrounding areas. Plus she’s the least annoying female character in the series (except maybe for Fang).

Lightning’s actions will have the ability to slow or accelerate time, making the doomsday countdown a little more flexible than 13 days — good news for those of us who occasionally like to stop and smell, er, ride the Chocobos.
