As Jake the Dog has been known to say… Get your hero on, dude! A new Adventure Time game is in development, and it might be the title that finally brings the Land Ooo to consoles in all its endearingly bizarre glory. So stuff a sword and the Enchiridion in your backpack, and read on to learn all we know about the game.

It’s probably an understatement to say that Adventure Time has had a somewhat lackluster history as a platform for video games. While the adventures of Finn and Jake make for some phenomenal storytelling on television, their video games have failed to capture the show’s wit, beauty and charm. Maybe, just maybe, that’s about to change.

Revealed earlier today, Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations is a brand new title being developed by Vicious Cycle Software. Described as a modern take on the classic adventure game genre, this newest Adventure Time game will focus heavily on exploring, puzzle solving, and… well, investigating. Unlike earlier Adventure Time games, which relied on top-down and side scrolling perspectives, Finn & Jake Investigations will be three dimensional, creating fully realized characters and locations, such as Candy Kingdom, Wizard City and Castle Lemongrab.

in a post on the official Playstation blog, David Ellis, Senior Designer and Writer at Viscous Cycle Games, provided some additional details about the game. Here’s how he describes the premise for Finn and Jake Investigations…

Joshua and Margaret — Jake’s mother and father, who also raised Finn — were seasoned detectives back in the days before becoming parents. They received their assignments from a machine called the “tickertype,” which printed out information on various cases. Now, Finn and Jake have unearthed the tickertype and decide to go into the investigation business themselves.

Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations consists of multiple investigative adventures which tie into each other to create a cohesive overall experience. And while combat isn’t a focus of the game, Finn and Jake will still find themselves in a decent number of epic showdowns with some familiar foes.

Destructoid was able to uncover some very early footage of the game, which you can check out below.

While there is no release date yet, publisher Little Orbit is promising a launch later this year for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii U, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Colecovision… OK, those last two might not be true. But you never know.

Joe was born in a time of war. A console war. Two electronic titans were locked in a heated battle for the living rooms of America. Which titans, you ask? Well, the Fairchild Channel F and the Atari 2600 of course. You see, Joe is old. So many of his favorite games tend to be on the older side as well. But that hasn’t stopped him from developing unhealthy obsessions with such modern franchises as Halo and Mass Effect. Just don’t tell him how long it’s been since the original Metroid was released. His aging heart can’t take the shock.
