The Secret World business model described

We finally have news regarding the type of business model Funcom will be employing in their upcoming MMO The Secret World. In a forum post, community manager Oliver ‘Tarib’ Kunz stated the game will be using the tried and true subscription model. In addition, micro transactions and a cash shop will also be included.

From his post:

“We will be revealing more information about the store at a later date, but what we can say for now is that it will focus mostly on convenience item and character customisation items such as clothing – of which The Secret World will offer a ton of variety! As developers we are being very careful in making sure that items purchased through the store does not give players any unfair advantage against those who do not use the in-game store.”

Kunz was quick to reassure players that these additions would not unbalance the game in any way, and that “character power” will still be based on your skill as a gamer rather than how much money you’re willing to spend.

“Funcom already has considerable experience with in-game stores such as these and we have previously implemented these systems without damaging game balance in our other games, and as such we are confident the same will be true for The Secret World”

The Secret World is set for an April 2012 release.
