Driveclub gets a release date, new trailer
So this is what they meant by “back to the drawing board,” huh? After two delays, an admission that the game was being rethought on a fundamental level, and the departure of the game’s director, Driveclub finally has a release and a flashy new trailer. For both fans of car porn, and game industry drama, today is a very good day. Read on for the details.
We all remember Driveclub, don’t we? It was one of the very first games announced for the Playstation 4, all the way back in February of last year, during the system’s unveiling. At the time, Sony in-house developer Evolution Studios lauded the game’s revolutionary graphics engine, which rendered everything down to the stitching on the car seats with unparalleled realism. A racing game built around car collecting and team events, Driveclub was positioned as a high profile launch title for the Playstation 4.
But things often don’t go according to plan int he video game industry, and in October of last year, the game was unceremoniously delayed until “early 2014.” OK, not a bid deal. These things happen, right? Then Sony laid off a number of employees at Evolution Studios. Then the game’s director left. Then the game was delayed a second time, with a high ranking Sony executive admitting at the time that they were taking Driveclub “back to the drawing board.”
After all that delicious drama (if you’re into that sort of thing) I started to wonder if Driveclub was destined for a spot in the Vaporware Hall of Fame. But in a post earlier today on the official Playstation Blog, President of SCE Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida announced that Driveclub will be released on October 7th, 2014. Touching on the game’s multiple delays, Yoshida had the following to say.
The problem with being ambitious is you have to be prepared to accept there will be challenges along the way. What DRIVECLUB offers has not been previously achieved in this category, and, because of this, the team needed more time to give you the game you’re waiting for.
In addition to the release date, Sony also unveiled a brand new trailer for the game, full of those sexy pans and wide angle panoramas racing fans love so much. Check it out below.
