Far Cry 4 is officially a thing that is happening

ScreenHunter_03 May. 14 18.07BREAKING NEWS: new game coming from highly successful shooter franchise.  This time, it’s Far Cry 4, the latest in Ubisoft’s series of outlandish FPS advantures.  And if the teaser site is any indication, the fourth installment will be even more bonkers than the last one.  Read on for all the details.

The game was first announced as part of Ubisoft’s financial report for 2013-2014, which is a riveting read, if you have the time.  Three pages into the report, Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot is quoted as saying the following.

“The year’s performance will be led by five games – Assassin’s Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Just Dance, The Crew and Watch Dogs.”

Pretty ballsy of him to say these games will be huge hits before they’re even released…. oh, who am I kidding?  They’re all going to sell a ton and we all know it.  We’re sheep.  SHEEEEP!  Sorry, got carried away there.  Anyway, back to Far Cry 4.  Unlike the previous games which featured tropical settings, Far Cry 4 will take place in a region of the Himalayas known as Kyrat, which is described by Ubisoft as “breathtaking, perilous and wild.”  What did you expect?  Ugly, safe and tame?  It’s the friggin Himalayas.  Kyrat is struggling under the despotic rule of a maniacal self-appointed king, and it’s up to you and a talking robot dog to overthrow him.  OK, the robot dog is (at best) baseless speculation, but it could totally happen.

Quoted on the Ubisoft blog, Far Cry Executive Producer Dan Hay had the following to say about the development of Far Cry 4.

“Following the success of Far Cry 3, we wanted to take the franchise to the next level and create a game that will surprise players and exceed fans’ expectations.  Given the unique setting, we feel Far Cry 4 will stand out as a top first-person shooter and we’re eager to reveal more about the game in the coming months.”`

The game already has a website up, which describes the gameplay as “using a vast array of weapons, vehicles and animals, players will write their own story across and exotic open world landscape.”   The game is available for pre-order, with a free limited edition upgrade which grants you three extra story missions, in which you have to “save Hurk from imprisonment.”  You also get Hurk’s trusty harpoon gun.  Who is Hurk, you ask?

That’s Hurk.  He looks like a Hurk.

Fary Cry 4 will be released this November 18th in North America and Australia for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.  Europe will follow on the 20th, and England on the 21st.

Joe was born in a time of war. A console war. Two electronic titans were locked in a heated battle for the living rooms of America. Which titans, you ask? Well, the Fairchild Channel F and the Atari 2600 of course. You see, Joe is old. So many of his favorite games tend to be on the older side as well. But that hasn’t stopped him from developing unhealthy obsessions with such modern franchises as Halo and Mass Effect. Just don’t tell him how long it’s been since the original Metroid was released. His aging heart can’t take the shock.
