Jen lives in Seattle and likes to play games and then write about them. Her all time favorite games include the Mass Effect series, Dragon Age: Origins, The Witcher, World of Warcraft, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Crimson Alliance or Why I Haven’t Slept

crimsonalliance1

With all of the in depth, involved, complicated, expensive MMO RPG emotionally engaging story based shooters out there, sometimes you just need something simple to enjoy.  The Mass Effects, Torchlights, SWOTORs and Warcrafts are all great and a lot of fun to play, but what happens when you’re just not in the mood for anything over complicated or involved?  You turn to XBox Live and its vast assortment  of games perfectly catered to this state of mind.  Crimson Alliance is one of those games and it makes good on its promise.

Bioware Invites First Week Testers Back for SWOTOR

swtor-closed-beta-invite

Bioware has an update on all the beta testing for Star Wars: The Old Republic and it looks like the original gangstas from the initial round of invites are being invited back for another weekend.  Community Manager Stephen Reid explained that one of the reasons people were being invited back is that there were issues with the initial inviatations being kind of lost in the mail so to speak and, in a nut shell, those that originally signed on to do it didn’t really get to experience the game.   Bioware is trying to “do the right thing” according to […]

SWOTOR Will Have Gay! …Eventually!

Star-Wars-Old-Republic-Logo

Bioware has officially confirmed that there will be same sex romance in Star Wars: The Old Republic, just not yet.  Community Manager Stephen Reid said that the implementation of same sex relationships will be a post launch feature due to “design constraints.”  I suppose when making such a monumental MMO its difficult to get everything you want in there from the get go.  This makes me wonder though.  If you’re playing a male smuggler in SWOTOR who loves the ladies because he has no other option, and then the patch offering same sex relationships gets released, do you then role […]

Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition Announced

mountainlion

Come October 14th, everyone can ride around with their favorite crunchy pantsed cowboy John Marston with a special edition of Red Dead Redemption!  It will include all the good stuff most of you have already played like Undead Nightmare, the Liars and Cheats pack, Outlaws to the End as well as the outfits and all the rest of the goodies we’ve all spent time and money downloading over the past year or so.  And for those of you who didn’t find John Marston’s antics difficult enough, there is also a new hardcore difficulty for the single player mode.

Gears of War 3 Released Early in Norway

GOWcampaignshot

Someone’s gonna get in trouuuubbblllle.  Looks like a retailer in Norway through the site Elkjop.no  is ignoring all the rules and has released copies of Gears of War 3 long before the September 20th release date.  Of course, everyone is scrambling to figure out the root of the problem to decide who should be punished and how and all that, but people already have the games so I’m not sure how much good will come out of that.  I guess we’ll just have to accept what I’ve always known, which is that Norwegians are the most renegade, rebel rule breakers […]

SWOTOR’s Smuggler Has a New Video

smuggler

Bioware has given us all a new video for their smuggler class in Star Wars: The Old Republic.  The important things to remember, when watching the video after the jump are that a) You will never be Han Solo, but you can still wear awesome vests, b) Hey check out that dancing Twilek hologram and c) When faced with a scary level boss it’s best to just teleport your ass out of there.  Enjoy.

And Now I Want Muffins – A Review of Muffin Knight

muffinknight

After watching our little video preview of Muffin Knight from Angry Mob Games I realized two things:  One, I was hungry and two, the game looked pretty cute.  So I decided to try it out, and it was the most whimsical $2.99 I’ve ever spent.

Uphill Both Ways and All That Crap

Classic-Gamer-vs-Modern-Gamer

I’m old.  Not old old, not puttering around with cane, gumming oatmeal old.  Not even close.  In real life I’m still a relatively young person or can at least pass for one (sometimes I even still get carded!).  This is not the case in the gaming world.  Oftentimes I feel like a relic of days gone by.  I started playing video games when all they could do was one thing and the controller had two buttons – two buttons!  I’m not complaining.  I’ve been lucky enough to watch the last 20 or so years of gaming evolution and to be […]

Confessions of a “Casual” Gamer

Easy Difficulty

I have a confession.  Oftentimes, when playing a game, for one reason or another I lower the difficulty setting to “easy” or “casual” or “extreme pussy.”  Wow!  What a relief to finally get that off of my chest!  I feel free!  I feel liberated!  I feel you staring at the screen and judging me…

So… We Can Save the World?

realityisbroken

I love games, especially video games.  They make me happy.  They enable my escapism.  They make me feel like I’ve accomplished something when I finish one.  Wouldn’t it be great if real life felt like that?  Jane McGonigal seems to think it can.  In her book Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World, she asserts that we as gamers are not wasting our time playing games (I knew it!) and that we can change the way this entire funky planet functions.
