She Has Arrived: More Love for Mass Effect 3’s Female Shepard

me3femshep

Since its inception, the Mass Effect franchise has been all about the player. The story being affected by your choices is one of the premier features of the game: whether it’s being nice to a council of aliens to get them to help you, or pushing a mercenary out of a window because he won’t give you information, your choices matter. While BioWare has consistently used the facial scan of Dutch male model Mark Vanderloo for the Shepard in the commercials and trailers, there’s always been the option to make a custom Shepard to suit your preferences of how you […]

Escaping Reality

escapism1

I think I game to fill a void in my life.  There is a sense of disconnection, a definite feeling that I have no control, and just a lack of purpose.  I hate it.  And in so many ways gaming offers a balm for that pain.  It eases the burden, even if only slightly sometimes, and it gives me something that maybe only music will ever transcend: a sense of wonder and hope.  Some might not understand this at all.  Actually quite sure a few might snicker at this revelation.  But then I look at the world around me and […]

Mass Effect for the RPG virgin

masseffect

When I met my new friend Tash, she told me that she likes to play video games. I thought she was pretty cool, and I liked that she wore her gamer status with pride. When I admitted that I occasionally play games, she asked me which ones. I blushed and responded in sotto voice “You know, Civilization, Prince of Persia, Wii games…” Despite my very low gamer street cred, Tash welcomed me into her fold. She proceeded to encourage me to write about the games I play (like Angry Birds on my iPhone) and to try out other games, like […]

The Second M

warcraftknowthatguy

The premise behind any MMORPG is pretty simple:  Get a bunch of similarly-interested people together, stick them on a server and watch the pot boil as they grind and quest and level their way up the seemingly never-ending ladder of in-game objectives and exploration.  The great thing – or worst thing, depending on your perspective – about any MMO is that second M: the Multiplayer aspect.  But what happens if you don’t necessarily need that all-important feature?

Guest Feature – Moral Kombat

Moral kombat

Written by guest contributor Ethan Meixsell Last night I threw on the documentary “Moral Kombat”, looking to kill some time while my wife was doing some school preparation.  It is a documentary that explored the impact of violence in video games.  I found the style of the documentary rather irritating.  It is an hour and a half of low attention-span cuts, interspersing interviews and digitally rendering these interviews into the sets of various video games…cool idea, and a cool motif…for 5 minutes, but not an hour and a half.

Holy cats, everyone!  It’s time for 2012!  There were some amazing games that came out in the past year.  There were so many great games in fact that I had to stagger my budget and choose between food and gaming a number of times.  Gaming usually won.  To celebrate the new year, Save Game’s crew has come up with their favorites from the last 365 days.  Here they are, our picks for Game of the Year.

We’ve come to the end of Save Game’s 12 Days of Christmas Gamer Gifts Guide – and what a wide range of gifts we’ve featured. From soap to jewelry, magnets to coasters and even LED drink lamps. But today I offer my last gamer gift – and for the last day I’ve chosen something from my favourite video game series, in my favourite video game merchandise format.
